Sustainable Harvesting and Management of Truffle Woods

Sustainable Harvesting and Management of Truffle Woods

I will advise you on how to search for truffles, where to look and some tale tale signs to look out for. I will show you what a truffle woodland looks like, explain the ecology and focus on the woodland community. I will endeavour to show you truffle flies and how to use them to hunt; I will show you truffle beetles, considered a truffle pest, animals truffle feeding platforms and signs of our wonderful animal competitors at work; I will teach you how to harvest sustainably and with respect to the community of invertebrates and all that depend on truffle within the food chain and the future generations of trees.

We will be returning dried truffle powder to the woods using truffle trimmings not fit for consumption for the kitchen after truffle prep and cleaning.

Wth permission from the landowner will be individually inoculating young regenerated whips with a sterile inoculum that I have made at HQ, in areas where there should be more truffle presence. I will show you how to do this. Constantly loosing woodland habitat as a result of land reclamation/overpopulation; I feel it is my obligation to spread the truffle love for the next generation of trees, their communities and others to enjoy as much as I do.

I will be talking about woodland forestry management for the sustainable production of truffle and why the UK is becoming increasingly more favourable for truffle, especially T melanosporum; an interesting prospect!! Managing woodlands for the sustainable harvest of truffle is equal to conservation management and can also be done hand in hand with timber production if carefully considered. I offer these services to those who are interested in their own woodlands truffle potential on chalk. This would be a good foray/ talk to attend if you have land/woodland that you think or know has truffle presence; or if would like to start a truffle orchard I can also help you decide if it is a good idea or not and if so put you in touch with some of the leading pioneers and truffle tree growers in the business here in the UK and in Spain.

Delicious fresh soup and bread will be served for lunch with truffle of course - along with other wild samples from our foray for you to taste. Please state any dietary requirements
